Now the North and West Highland Route is truly magnificent, it is the very best of the wildest part of Scotland, the area that has been blasted by the Atlantic, the Gulf Stream and the weather for millions of years, and what it coastline it has sculptured. This is the area with Mountains, stunning sea lochs that have been cut into the land and just the most amazing golden beaches and aqua marine waters due to the lack of people and pollution.
.
This is one of the longest of Scotlands Tourists Routes at 158 miles long but to be honest you will wish it goes on forever, this really is a tourist route that you will remember and talk about for the rest of your life.
.
Starting way up on the west coast at Ullapool, which is already 200 miles north of Glasgow, you will certainly be aware you are situated in one of the most beautiful places on earth, and without spoiling it for you in the next 158 miles it only gets better.
.
As well as the most unbelievable views the entire length of the route, you will start off driving through the North West Highlands Geopark which is home to some of the oldest rock formations in Europe.
.
Due to the coastline and rock formation, this route is filled with the most amazing coves, bays and caves and nothing is more spectacular than Smoo Cave, a huge cave with a 50 foot high entrance and when inside you will see underground waterfalls and sinkholes.
.
The coast is home to thousands of seabirds which you can see nesting on many of the cliffs as you tour this awe inspiring area. If you are looking for an unbelievable trip I suggest taking the boat from Tarbet to Handa Island which is famous for its colonies of over 100,000 seabirds, I have taking this trip many times before it is truly amazing and well worth the stop.
.
If you don’t fancy taking a boat trip then don’t worry as you will have the change to sea all these amazing birds at RSPB Dunnet Head Nature Reserve which it wonderfully situated at the most northerly point of mainland Britain.
.
You will finish off at the famous village of John o”groats some 837 miles away from Lands End but only a 40 minute boat trip to the Isles of Orkney. Honestly, it can only get better, and like I said at the start you will not want this 158 miles of unrivaled beauty to finish, so jump on the ferry and continue the adventures touring Scotlands most amazing areas.
