As the title suggests this tour explores many of the historical sites of the Borders as we travel north up through the heart of the country towards the Capital city of Edinburgh. This area of the country is known for its rolling hills and lush green valleys which is in stark contrast to the rugged coastline and mountains of the Highlands.
.
The Borders Historic Route is 89 miles long and starts off at the small village of Gretna Green famous for couples eloping from England to get married from as far back as 1754.
.
Due to the Scottish / English border it is not surprising this area is full of amazing historical buildings with the most amazing stories from the past. Ruined abbeys from as far back as the 11th century and stunning castles built up continuously through the centuries to defend Scotland from the attacking English armies.
.
As you travel up through the beautiful villages you will see how this industrial area all have their own unique quality and stories to tell from the defensive stories at the borders, into the textile industries, then on into the areas where mining played a huge part in peoples lives through the ages.
.
This is a beautiful route with the most spectacular building, so if history or architecture is your passion you will be in your element. Again like all the other routes the landscapes and the scenery are second to none and you will not be disappointed.
